Mise en Scene- Superbad

 Movie analysis of Superbad

Superbad is a comedy film that follows two high school friends, Seth and Evan, as they navigate their final weeks of high school and try to bring alcohol for a party. They get some help from their friend Fogell, who obtains a fake ID under the name "McLovin." The trio's plan to buy alcohol goes awry, leading to a series of misadventures and encounters with the police. Along the way, Seth and Evan confront their feelings for their respective love interests, Becca and Jules.

Setting-

The majority of the movie takes place in the suburban neighborhood where the main characters, Seth and Evan, live, as well as at their high school. These locations help to establish the characters' age and socioeconomic background, and also contribute to the film's overall sense of nostalgia and longing for the freedom and adventure of youth.

Additionally, the setting also plays a role in shaping the characters and their interactions. The house party scenes, which take place in a wealthier neighborhood, contrast with the characters' more modest home environment and highlights their feeling of not belonging. The contrast of different environment and home also helps to show their difference in social class, and it is also used to define the characters in a specific time, the teenage years.

Lighting-

The scenes taking place in Seth and Evan's neighborhood are lit in a warm, golden light, which evokes a sense of summer and carefree youth. The lighting is also used to create contrast between different locations in the movie. For example, the party scenes are set in a much more artificial and colder light, which helps to convey the idea that the party is a different environment and has different social dynamics than the characters' usual surroundings. The contrast of lighting in those different scenes reflects the characters' feelings of not belonging.

Additionally, lighting is used to create a sense of intimacy in certain scenes, particularly in the scenes between the characters and their love interests. These scenes are lit in a soft, warm light, which helps to convey the characters' feelings of attraction and vulnerability.

Costume-

The costumes worn by the main characters, Seth and Evan, are typical of American high school students of their age. They are often seen wearing casual clothes such as t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans, which helps to establish them as relatable and down-to-earth characters. Their outfits also helps to convey their friendship, showing that they share a similar taste in clothes and style.

The contrast between the clothing worn by the main characters and the other characters also helps to create a sense of social hierarchy within the film. Characters with higher social status, such as the popular kids or the police officer, are often seen wearing more formal or polished clothing, which helps to convey their higher status.

Staging-

The camera is often positioned at a low angle, with the characters standing tall in the frame. This framing gives the characters a sense of power and dominance within the high school environment, reflecting the power dynamics of the school's social hierarchy.

Staging is also used to convey the characters' relationships and dynamics within a scene. For example, in scenes with Seth and Evan together, they are often positioned close to each other, with the camera positioned at a medium shot. This framing helps to convey their strong bond and close friendship. On the other hand, when the characters interact with authority figures or people they feel uncomfortable with, they are often staged at a distance, with the camera positioned at a wide shot. This framing helps to convey their feelings of insecurity or vulnerability.

Additionally, the use of movement and blocking (the positioning and movement of actors during a scene) can also play a role in developing the mise en scene. For example, in scenes where the characters are running or chasing, the camera will often follow their movement, creating a sense of urgency or pursuit.
