Representation
Welcome backk my wonderful followers. Today we will be talking about representation in Chasing Perfection (or maybe a different name).
When it comes to gender representation, the film features only one female character. However, Emily and I both believe that, as teenage girls ourselves, we can provide authentic representation of the teenage girl experience. We both have personal experience with mental health issues and have struggled with anxiety, although not to the same extent as the character Cathy, who is portrayed as an exaggeration.
While it may have been challenging to build fully fleshed out characters within the short time frame of the film's intro, we feel that including another male character would help to showcase how anxiety affects boys as well. Boys are not often represented in the media as valuable, and we believe this addition would provide a more well-rounded representation of anxiety's impact on both genders.
We do not believe that the portrayal of anxiety in the film is stereotypical, but rather that it is an accurate reflection of our own experiences, albeit somewhat inflated for dramatic effect. We hope that this film will help to increase awareness and understanding of mental health issues and provide much-needed representation for individuals who struggle with anxiety.
